Your first drive in Istanbul: speed, parking and traffic

The city is easier than it looks. Know three rules and the rest flows.

On the road, 4 min read

Istanbul traffic has a bigger reputation than it deserves. It's busy, yes, but the rules are clear and the roads are good. For day one, this is enough.

Speed limits

50 km/h in town. Outside town, 90 on two-way roads and 110 on divided ones. Motorways are mostly 130, some newer ones 140: follow the signs. Cameras and average-speed zones are common, and fines rose sharply in 2026. Speeding would be the most expensive extra on your rental.

When to drive

From 07:30 to 10:00 and 17:00 to 20:00 the bridges and main roads lock up. A trip that takes half an hour at 2 pm can take an hour and a half at 6 pm. If you're crossing continents, pick midday or after 9 pm.

Parking

Don't hunt for street space in the old city or Beyoğlu. Use İSPARK, the city's own car parks: open, multi-storey and kerbside ones take Istanbulkart or a credit card, and the app shows the nearest. Don't pay unofficial attendants; real ones carry a device and give a receipt.

Lanes and signs

Signs are in Turkish but use international symbols. The right lane often fills with buses and minibuses; the middle one flows best. On a roundabout, the car already on it has priority. Seat belts are compulsory front and back, and phones at the wheel are banned.

If something happens

After an accident, take photos before moving the car, fill in a report with the other driver, and call us. Our line is open day and night. Keep the rental papers in the glovebox and our number in your phone.
